During his time at South Brunswick High School, Elko did multi-sports, lettering in football, basketball, and baseball. Playing quarterback for his high school football team, he was tabbed as Greater Middlesex Conference’s top quarterback in 1994. His achievements in high school induced him into the school’s hall of athletic fame in 2012. Elko pursued the track and the classroom at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a safety for the Penn Quakers, helping the football team win an Ivy League title in 1998 on the defensive side of the ball.
Coaching Career: Beginning
The coaching career for Elko kicked off shortly after his playing days. It started in 1999, when he earned a graduate assistant position with Stony Brook University, followed by defensive backs coach duty at his alma mater, Penn, the following year. He spent then the next half decade coaching various stops at places like Merchant Marine Academy, Fordham University, Richmond and Hofstra from defensive coordinator all the way down to linebackers coach.
Collaboration with Dave Clawson
The bulk of Elko’s coaching development came at the hands of Dave Clawson. The two were together for 12 years over multiple stops:
Fordham University (2002–2003): Elko was the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
University of Richmond (2004–2005): He remained in this capacity, working with special teams and linebackers.
Bowling Green State University (2009–2013): The defenses coordinated by Elko, as a defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, drew national attention.
Wake Forest University (2014-2016): Elko is the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at for a pair of seasons in which the Deacons rank nationally in categories like turnovers and scoring defense.
Transition to Prominent Programs
Success at Wake Forest launched him into the defensive coordinator position at the University of Notre Dame in 2017. With the task of rebuilding a mediocre defense, Elko utilized game plans that elevated the Fighting Irish’s defense and helped to turn around what had been an underwhelming season.
In 2018, Elko joined Texas A&M University as the defensive coordinator for head coach Jimbo Fisher. His defensive schemes were major reasons the Aggies had their moments in the sun during his time in College Station, including an upset victory over Alabama and improved defensive statistics.
2022 Season: Elko led the Blue Devils to a 9–4 record, culminating in a victory at the Military Bowl. His leadership resulted in him winning the ACC Coach of the Year Award due to the great turnaround he was able to achieve.
2023 Season: The team recorded an 8–5 mark, punctuated by the upset victory over Clemson. That fact only tended to further validate Elko’s acumen since the Blue Devils were able to take down some critical victories throughout the year.
Return to Texas A&M as Head Coach
On November 27, 2023, Elko returned to Texas A&M University to be its head coach this time out. Quite knowledgeable about the Aggies and considering a very good stop previously in College Station during the course of his career, while enjoying success other places, it made him the logical candidate to establish a new tradition in College Station.
Coaching Philosophy and Impact
Being able to take a defensive team in and make them a force-that has been relatively consistent throughout most of his assistant coaching career, and that is something that should be expected because of his name. It’s beyond what he does on the whiteboard: the culture a leader like Brian Elko uses to build resilience and cohesive teamwork inspires respect from everyone around him, player and peer alike.
